Middle-aged engineer Jan Rudinski (Janez Vrhovec – Pula Silver Arena for Best Actor) arrives in a small industrial town to work in machine assembly. He takes up lodging at the house of a local hairdresser Rajka (Milena Dravić). Though Jan at first resists the seductive powers of the attractive, but much younger girl, the two strike up a romance. The story takes a tragicomic turn when Jan cannot decide between work and love and Rajka meets a handsome truck driver. A travelling circus is also thrown into the mix. Man Is Not a Bird is celebrated as one of the key Black Wave works. Critic Vincent Canby of The New York Times described it as “by far the most original, intelligent, witty and important film I’ve seen so far this year.”
