Years before conquering Hollywood with his megahit Thor: Ragnarok, New Zealand director Taika Waititi made ZFF audiences fall in love with his quirky comedies (Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople,…). Jojo Rabbit, the winner of the prestigious People’s Choice Award at Toronto IFF, treats us yet again to a batch of Waititi’s signature mix of humour and pathos in a story about Jojo, a lonely boy growing up in WWII Germany. When Jojo discovers his mom (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic, his entire world is turned upside down. Together with his slow-witted imaginary friend Adolf Hitler (T. Waititi), the young Hitlerjugend memeber will have re-examine his nationalist beliefs.
