On a remote mountaintop, eight children with guns keep close watch on an American hostage, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson – I, Tonya, August: Osage County) and cow Shakira. The young commandos belong to a shadowy force known as The Organisation. During the day, they engage in military exercises and at night indulge in youthful hedonism. But when their cow is killed during battle, their frolicking is over. Artfully blending war drama and thriller, Monos is an unsettling hallucinatory vision of the chaos and absurdities of war from an adolescent’s perspective, drawing comparisons to Apocalypse Now. Mica Levi, better known as Micachu (Under the Skin, Jackie) composed the soundtrack, while the film premiered at Sundance and was Colombia’s Oscar candidate.
